SUSIE LONIE

Restless Planet Fragile Clay, white earthenware clay coloured with watercolour paints on an A1 glass panel.

Raw clay forms are fragile and easily altered by water, heat and impact. The surface of the Earth is constantly changed by the same forces on a colossal scale.

This work explores the impermanence of raw clay by simulating changes to the planet’s surface.  We follow the clay as it is transformed from the single Pangaea super-continent of 200 million years ago to eventually becoming the seven continents we know today.  Its journey broadly explores geological theory but the clay’s materiality is the focus, inspired by the transformational external forces.  Perry’s verbose maps influenced the labelling of continents so they could be followed “through time”. Cartoon effects and drumbeats add energy and playfulness to the performance.
