MORLEY GALLERY

YOUR SAFETY OUR CONCERN

7th - 11th September 2022

Presenting an exhibition of new work by the Fine Art Mentoring group at Morley College. Led by artist and tutor Erika Winstone, twelve artists have been supported through tutorials, workshops and artists' talks as part of the Fine Art Mentoring course. They have been encouraged in their art practice and the daily life of being an artist over the period of a year, culminating in this exhibition. This support, as well as the sustenance which comes from being part of a group has helped the artists feel more connected, making the title 'Your Safety Our Concern' especially resonant.

This exhibition of work has been made following two years of living with fear and isolation, when making art has often been a survival mechanism. There is also a recognition that reassuring words and slogans from powers that be may not be as convincing as they were once perceived to be. Works include sculpture and installation, painting, drawing, collage printmaking, performance and kinetic sculpture. It brings together a group of artists with the common purpose of investigating and expressing the world around them but with different approaches. Their work is an exciting inquiry into the state of being.

Artists: Siobhan Beaton, Sharon Blair, Amanda Jones, Chris Jones, Annika Kadike, Ruthie Martin, Flora McEvedy, Charles Meek, Olga Shkilna, Patrick Stratton, Miranda Townsend and Salli YuleTsingas

Thanks: We are delighted to be returning to exhibit again in the wonderful newly re-designed and extended Morley Gallery and would like to thank Jack Davy and his team, Brendan Murphy and Sara Robertson-Jonas for their support. With special thanks for the invaluable contributions made by the following visiting artists this year; Mark Dean, Dan Howard-Birt, Justin Hibbs, Matt Hale, Barbara Nicholls and Anne Ryan.

“I congratulate each mentee on this exciting exhibition, I am very proud of them and confidently look forward to seeing their continuing artistic journeys.” - Erika Winstone
