During the most recent lockdown, HND Ceramics students at Morley worked remotely from their homes with few tools and no firing facilities. Responding to the project title ‘Fragile’, students were invited to investigate the creative potentials and material limitations that raw clay can offer. Exploring clay in its most natural unconstrained state, students have revealed its material capacity for performance, time-based and site-specific art. Adopting its ephemeral nature, clay has been sculptured, recycled and returned to the land never taking on a permanent form. Landscape, human relationships and a sense of belonging have emerged as strong themes in this experimental body of work.
