Sue Gunn
My work explores interconnections between the flow systems found in nature, the body and the world around us. My intention is to capture the shapes found in natural structures like tree roots and veins, riverbeds and lava streams, neural pathways and rock formations and also the patterns found in the man-made; architecture, wiring systems and street maps.
I start by drawing loosely tangled images, not looking at the page. I then make corrugated cardboard models to represent the gestural movements of my contour drawings. The maquettes act as a visual guide as I build up the sculptures, assembling modular ribbons of clay. I work against the natural inclination of the material, to create a fluctuating tension. My aim is to capture a state of movement, looping and winding, which ebbs, flows and evolves.
