We present work of students on the innovative Online Sculpture Course series at Morley College. Responding to the introduction of lockdown restrictions in spring 2020, the aim was to take learning out of the sculpture studio and into students’ homes.

An initial group of 7 students enrolled, settling into a weekly routine with the Course’s creator and tutor Ben Swift. A year later, and the new learning process has been thoroughly explored. The spirit of the course has encouraged the group to become more open and flexible in approaching projects, more aware and appreciative of the diversity sculpture offers. The stimulation and empathy of the tutor, and group support have been key.

Conventionally, Sculpture is taught in dedicated studios, equipped with complex specialised tools and machines, a wide range of materials and technical support. To emulate that learning experience in students’ homes, Ben offered 3 hour sessions online, which comprised a mix of introduction and demonstration of a particular theme, such as transparency, hanging, relief, the vertical, to which each student then responded in their own way.  Images of their results were displayed and discussed in the group.  Latterly, Ben has added individual tutorials.

Beginning sculpture online was a gesture of faith by Morley College and Ben Swift in an uncertain time; it has proved to be a splendid creative experience.
