Gallery Finissage

So to start the renovation and reinvention process, to start any process, research is needed. Have people done this before?, How did they do this and most importantly did it work?

We have loads of ideas for the new gallery and a workshop we attended a short while ago told us about a process of imagining as big as we can and then see what could be done and what would work. We feel inspired and excited for the future and want you to aswell. We want you to dream big, think of all the possibilities and help us make the New Morley Gallery the very best it can be!

One report we came across and felt particularly inspired by is the ‘Rethinking Relationships’ Report by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. This looks at the gallery as different spaces for different people. What a gallery space should and could be? To harness this and start the process we took the five headings of Colleges, Town Halls, Parks, Temples and Home and thought of questions to sit with these as a starting point for your answers.

The next step was how to get this information to you and how to start having these conversations which will be the very basis of plans for the new space. We decided to host a gallery finnisage. A celebration of the great 51 years of the gallery and a time to share gallery news and to start these conversations.

The headings and questions were placed across the gallery and we had some really interesting responses:

“Make the initial entry to the gallery as un-intimidating as possible, don’t have the reception desk facing the door…”

“Battle of the Artists: Improvised Art Making on Site to a theme”

“Easy to look into the space - To see what is going on from outside - Natural Light, good energy…”

“I feel at home in places like the Barbican because I can be there and be ignored or unseen”

“…Workshops and Events that focus on how we feel when making Art/Design/Music rather than the outcome”

“A Regular Podcast featuring local artists”

“An Art Cafe, where at certain times of the week people can drop in and join in discussions with like minded people”

“…Reference Library where people can have access to past exhibitions”

“Using Motions sensors to trigger display, sound etc”

But the process doesn’t stop here, this is just the start!

We look forward to hearing from you and can’t wait to share this process with you.

Help us imagine the possibilities. Dream big. Be inspired
