By the desk in the “bedroom” there are notes with migration stories. The visitors write their own memories on cards and put them up on a notice board themselves.

Visitors co-create at Migration Museum

The Migration Museum doesn’t just talk about engaging the visitors in their current exhibition, Room to Breathe.

The exhibition tells stories from generations of new arrivals to UK and is built as a home with bedroom and kitchen and also a barbershop and a classroom. Everywhere in the rooms there are small notes attached to cushions, clothes and food cans with authentic stories about experiences from arriving in a new country.

And, in all spaces there's a possibility for the visitors to write down their own migration memories. During the exhibition period the curators swap the existing texts with new ones from the visitors. An easy and inspiring way to make the visitors participate in creating and changing the content of the exhibition.

1 Nov 2018 – 28 Jul 2019, Migration Museum at The Workshop, 26 Lambeth High Street, London, SE1 7AG

On shelves in the “kitchen” you’ll find tins and jars with groceries from all around the world. The label texts are continuously replaced with migrants’ memories.

It can be quite difficult to arrive in a new country and start a new school, maybe in an unknown language. In the ‘school’ you can take part in their stories, and also tell your own.
