Myra Bloomfield, ‘Hanging by a thread’

I navigate a visual language to express the vulnerability felt by front line workers bereft of their protective uniform. The medical scrub as the foundation garment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is the starting point of this work. The tough polycotton cloth is painstakingly unwoven thread by thread, as if time, experience and political failure dissipate its primary function. Conversely the white stitch mirrors the tensile strength of the warp and weft as they cross, yet by their very nature as individual units the stiches are rendered pregnable and fall away. The pigment stiffened fibres of the bandaging inserts, echoed in screen print elements together with the accumulated ravel of drawn threads, celebrate the indomitability of the human spirit in the face of trauma.
