PERSONAL PROJECTS
This exhibition brings together two Morley classes to celebrate the individual ways of drawing and painting achievable on our intermediate-level courses.
In ‘Draw and Paint: Personal Projects’, taught by Malina Busch, students are learning to develop their ideas into artwork. Many students use their project to improve their understanding of painting and drawing techniques or to explore a subject or material for the first time; this might range from portraiture to abstraction or from oil paint to watercolour.
In class, students are supported in their explorations by material demonstrations and group discussions. They are guided through each step of the studio process from brainstorming in sketchbooks and creating a composition through to a finished artwork, or potentially a series of paintings. During the term, the class visited gallery exhibitions and students researched artwork by modern and contemporary artists to further their personal development in the studio. Many of the students in this group share an interest in combining figurative and abstract approaches to painting, combining paint and collage, and using colour to create a sense of mood.
Students on ‘The Drawing Course: Intermediate’, taught by Steve Wright, have been learning many different ways of drawing, taking it beyond fundamental skills. Each week, the tutor sets drawing tasks based on images, the life model, still life, or artists’ drawings. It is through trying out a range of approaches and materials that students gradually identify their own preferred ways of working. Some have achieved personal and original results by taking ideas or techniques taught in class and developing them at home.
For this exhibition, we have chosen drawings that represent the diversity of work found on this course. As Steve and his students know well, even the most narrowly-focussed drawing task allows everyone’s personality to shine through.
